Big action movies are best seen on the big screen, says director and screenwriter Charles Evered.
And when Evered wants to catch the latest blockbuster, he often goes to Regal's Riverside Plaza 16.
"The popcorn is fresh, the kids who work there are great — it's just a good place to go," he says. "I love seeing big action movies in theaters with stadium seating and great sound because it's the opposite of the kind of movie I made."
That movie would be "Adopt a Sailor," about a sophisticated New York couple who befriend a navy sailor during Fleet Week. After spending several months on the festival circuit — which included two sold-out performances at January's Palm Springs International Film Festival — "Sailor" is expected to go into wider release later this year.
Evered, who also is an assistant professor of theater at UC Riverside, is writing a script for his second feature, a Hitchcockian thriller set along a stretch of the new Jersey shoreline 10 miles from New York city. "It's about something catastrophic that happens in Manhattan, but it's a mystery to the people of Sandy Hook," he says. "It has been great fun to write."
For many, a night out at the movies often includes a meal at a restaurant. It's the same for Evered, who goes to the multiplex about once a week and often will dine beforehand at Killarney's, California Pizza Kitchen, Panera Bread or one of the other restaurants at Riverside Plaza.
"There are a lot of great places to eat," he says. "It's nice to go early and hang out before I catch a movie."
